Second Grade Scoop

Welcome back to school 2nd graders!

What an absolutely wonderful first week of school!  We are so excited to be back at school and we can see that your children are excited too! We are going to have a wonderful and exciting year.

Thank you parents, for helping our first week of pick up run so smoothly.  Please remember to complete phone calls before getting into the pick-up lines.  It is very helpful to the parking attendants if you are paying attention at all times.  We have over 700 students to get picked up on a daily basis and your undivided attention to what is happening is greatly appreciated and needed for a successful pick-up.  Just a reminder, please be patient with us as we get to know you and the adults that will be picking up your children.  We may ask unfamiliar adults for their ID so we know they are who they say they are.  If someone other than the regular person will be picking up your child, please notify us either by a note or e-mail and let us know their name and we will check their ID.

You should have seen Reading Logs in your child’s Homework Folder.  These will be due every Monday.  Students need to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night, or a total of 80 minutes for a given week.  Students can read those 80 minutes any time during the week and if they read more they will receive credit for the extra time read.

Please remember to check your child’s Homework Folder on a daily basis.  Any information on the “Parent Information” side is for parents to look at.  Sometimes there will be information that needs to be signed and returned to school.  Many times it will be student work completed and graded that can stay at home or it could be just information you need to be aware of.  Please complete homework that will be located on the “Homework” side, and then return to school by putting it back into the “Homework” side.

We will begin our snack backpack July 30th.  Snack Calendars were sent home Tuesday.  If you did not receive a Calendar, then you will be included in the next round for snack.  The rotation is done alphabetically.  Please remember to send a healthy snack with your child to share with the class.  These snacks should also be pre-packaged so we can easily distribute as students have snack during their Literacy class.  We will send a letter home when your child needs to bring in snack that will give you some suggestions of healthier snack options.

Please be looking for a classroom volunteer sign-up.  If you indicated on the Parent Volunteer Form that you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, we will send home a Classroom Volunteer Sheet where you may indicate when you would like to volunteer.  We will then create a calendar and send it home with your child to remind you of when you volunteered to come to our class and help.  We will do this on a monthly basis.  Please remember that there are no parent volunteers in the classroom for the first three weeks.

This year we have decided that we would like to have a less messy treat for birthdays.  Therefore, instead of bringing in cupcakes, if you would like to provide a treat for the class on your child’s birthday, some ideas could be, cookies, brownies, Rice Krispy treats, prepackaged ice cream bowls, or you can e-mail if you have another idea.
